De(Centralised) Park

New York City, USA

e8urban were selected as a joint winner of the international 2018 Iconoclast competition to redesign Central Park, starting, as Olmsted and Calvert Vaux did, from scratch. The competition asks how the new interprets the old, and how together, the new and the old anticipate the future.

Rather than redesign this urban icon our approach was to de-centralise the park in the context of the efficiency that new forms of autonomous road travel would bring, allowing us to create a network of linear spaces along existing city streets that were previously dominated by cars and concrete.
